Enteric Coating
Enteric Coating process
Enteric coating is the coating used for the medications that are sensitive to gastric acid, irritate the stomach lining, or require targeted delivery to the intestine for absorption. Protecting the drug from gastric degradation. Enteric coating can also used to modify the drug release profile. The coating is made up of polymers resistant to acidic pH but dissolves at higher pH levels than found in the intestine. New Enteric coating consists of new synthetic polymers, which are also called polyacids. Is polymers have Ionizable functional groups that make polymers water-soluble at a specific pH
Enteric coatings serve several purposes:
- Protect acid-labile drug substances from the acidic pH of the stomach.
- Prevent gastric distress or ulceration and nausea caused by irritating drugs.
- Deliver drugs that are optimally absorbed in the small intestine to their primary absorption site in their most concentrated form.
- Provide a delayed-release component to repeat action tablets.
